Supporting Biodiversity at Greyhope Bay

Greyhope Bay received £3,091 through Year 4 of the Just Transition Participatory Budgeting Fund to deliver its Green Storage Solutions project, introducing new sustainable storage facilities at its community hub on Torry Battery.

The project is replacing existing storage with durable new units topped with green roofs, creating habitats for pollinators while improving the resilience of the site against the challenging coastal weather. The upgraded storage will also reduce the need for regular journeys between the Greyhope Bay Centre and its office, helping to lower emissions associated with day-to-day operations.

Alongside the environmental benefits, the project is creating opportunities for volunteers to develop practical green skills by helping to establish and maintain the living roofs. These hands-on experiences allow people to learn about biodiversity and sustainable land management while contributing directly to the care of the site.

Although a relatively small investment, the project demonstrates how practical improvements can have a lasting impact. By combining sustainable infrastructure with volunteer involvement, Greyhope Bay is creating a more welcoming community space while supporting local biodiversity and encouraging greener ways of working.
