NERVS Blood Bikes is a volunteer-led charity that provides free transport services in support of NHS Grampian, helping ensure essential medical items, samples and medication reach where they are needed across the region.

Thanks to support from Year 4 of the Just Transition Participatory Budgeting Fund, NERVS secured £38,785 to purchase a new electric vehicle, strengthening its fleet while reducing emissions and operating costs. The investment is helping the charity deliver vital services more sustainably while ensuring more resources can be directed towards supporting patients and healthcare services. 

The vehicle has been introduced as part of a pilot project with NHS Grampian, supporting the delivery of medication directly to patients across Aberdeen and the wider region. By transporting medication to people in their homes, NERVS is helping patients leave hospital sooner, freeing up beds and improving efficiency within the healthcare system. 

Since joining the fleet, the electric vehicle has been used on daily journeys across Grampian, with volunteers carrying out multiple deliveries every day. Alongside the environmental benefits of lower carbon emissions, the vehicle is helping reduce fuel and maintenance costs, providing long-term savings for the charity. 

For a volunteer-run organisation, the funding has been transformational, providing access to a vehicle that would otherwise have been beyond reach. The project demonstrates how the Just Transition PB Fund is helping community organisations embrace greener technologies while continuing to deliver essential services that make a real difference across the North East.
